The Government of the Republic of The Gambia has declared that all shipments (including those in transit) to the territory of The Gambia shall be subject to the issuance of a CTN Certificate as of 15th May, 2023. This regulation is applicable to all goods exported and imported into The Gambia.
CTN reference number is to be entered in the goods description field of the Bill of Lading, as well as the shipment description field.

What is a CTN?
Cargo Tracking Notes (CTN’s) are a type of document used for tracking and monitoring cargo in international shipping. A CTN is a document that contains information about a cargo’s location and journey, including: the consignee the consignor the vessel details the port of loading or discharge.
As of 15 May 2023, all goods being exported and imported into the Gambia (including goods in transit) shall be subject to the issuance of a Customs Tariff (CTN) Certificate.

What is the Procedure?
- Under this law, all cargoes imported from overseas and shipped for commercial, commercial, in certain cases diplomatic and personal reasons must be accompanied by a Loading Certificate known as a CTN.
- The CTN reference number must be included in both the shipment reference and goods description fields on your bill of lading.
It is the responsibility of the shipper, exporter, and freight forwarder to obtain their CTN waiver certificates from their authorized representative.
Regulations
- A CTN certificate is required for all cargo to be shipped to Gambia, according to the Ministry’s Ports and Marine Transport.
- The CTN certificate shall be verified no later than five days prior to the vessel’s arrival at sea.
- Without the CTN certificate, the cargo cannot be cleared.
If the shipment arrives without a Certificate of Traceability (CTN) or with incorrect CTN information, you will be charged twice the cost of the certificate plus the regulatory fee set by the Government of The Gambia.
